INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVE BRIEFINGS:
Italian senators demand immediate lifting of Ocalan's solitary confinement

****

Appeal to the Italian prime minister

The Turkish government must lift Mr. Ocalan’s solitary confinement

On November 12, 2002 it is four years ago that Abdullah Ocalan, president of the Freedom and Democracy Congress (KADEK), arrived in Rome. After the abolishment of the death penalty in Turkey the death sentence imposed on Mr. Ocalan was converted into a life sentence. Mr. Ocalan is the sole prisoner on Imrali, the Turkish prison island.

For five weeks his lawyers had no contact to their client. Nor was his family allowed to visit him. The Kurds that live in Italy are very concerned about the tightened solitary confinement of KADEK-president Abdullah Ocalan. They have given a declaration, therefore, demanding that access by his lawyers be ensured and that the severe conditions of the solitary confinement he has endured now for a long time be lifted.

Tomorrow prime minister Berlusconi will meet the chairman of the AKP, Erdogan, whose party won an absolute majority in the November 3 polls. In this meeting Mr. Erdogan will ask for support by Italy for the Turkish EU accession bid.

The signatories to this appeal understand themselves as mediators for the Kurds who have gathered in front of the Palazzo Madama. Therefore they call on prime minister Berlusconi to forward their concern to Mr. Erdogan in view of Mr. Ocalan’s situation.

Further on, they demand the immediate lifting of the solitary confinement Mr. Ocalan is subjected to and the recognition of his constitutional rights as a prisoner.

Since the general situation in Turkish prisons has changed seriously for the worse of late we call on the prime minister to exert his influence on Mr. Erdogan in terms of a noticeable improvement.
